PICK-ME-UP: WALK UNDER THE SUN
Hello! Greetings from Brooklyn.
I've been taking a lot of naps lately. Unapologetically. On Saturday, rather than going on some grand adventure, I slept from 1-3pm. People always say self-care! self-care! self-care! Sometimes that means a $12 manicure or a solo walk along the water. Lately, it's meant a weekend nap. The kind where I don't set an alarm or wake up and feel bad that I decided to nothing when there's a list of everything I should be doing instead.
Life feels like you have to slow jog on a treadmill that never stops running. But the truth is, sometimes you have to give yourself a rest in order to keep the pace that makes this adventure of yours one big thrill.
In this issue: What happened when I got my aura read, an expert shares the best tips on being a great host, and a quote from a TV show that I adore.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is my Monday Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it for over 8-years, every single Monday morning, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.
WALK UNDERNEATH THE SUN
My friend took me to get my aura read.
I thought I'd sit down across from a person, who promised me they had magical powers, before sharing the mistakes of my past and my future.
The last time I did something like this was in 2016 when I went to a psychic who told me I'd never find love and that I'd be alone for the rest of my life (spoiler alert: I met Adam a week later. Full story here). That experience made me press the pause button on shelling out cash for questionable advice.
But I'm a different person these days. One who says yes to things for the sake of getting off the couch and putting pants on. I agreed to get my aura read at a spot in Queens without knowing what the heck that actually meant.
An aura reading taps into a person's energy. The place I went to has you touch this board (I was too nervous to ask questions about what I was touching) while a person takes your photo. When your photo develops, it shows a mix of colors all around you. Those colors make up your aura and each color means something different. Your reading can show your past, your future, and what your overall personality is like.
My reading was spot on.
“You have a tightness in your heart," the man said to me as he pointed to the colors in my photo. “You hold so much in, you don't share things with people, and you carry so much worry around with you.”
I looked him in the eyes and wondered if he's ever met a person like me before, one who tells so many stories out loud to people but keeps so many more locked inside.
“You know what you need?”
“Therapy?” I replied.
“No. A walk underneath the sun.”
“What the heck is that going to do for me and my tight heart?”
“Everything he said.”
We often forget the power of the simple things around us. We forget the way sitting alone in silence can help us tame so much noise or how saying the words I love you can jumpstart your tired heart, or how listening to that one little song can feel like you swallowed caffeine.
Just like walking in the sun can change your energy, force you to take a deep breath, and bring you natural happiness.
The more I thought about his suggestion, the more I remembered that I wasn't there for life advice. I was there to see the kind of energy I put out there to the world. I'm a person color-coded in emotion, creativity, selflessness, and worry.
So what advice do I give myself after that?
You can't fix a tight heart with sunshine, Jen. But you can use the brightness of it to remind you how to power through the dull.
All my love,
Jen Glantz

I just finished watching the show The Summer I Turned Pretty (originally a book) and really loved this quote: "Sometimes it’s like people are a million times more beautiful to you in your mind. It’s like you see them through a special lens — but maybe if it’s how you see them, that’s how they really are. It’s like the whole tree falling in the forest thing.”
