Hello! Greetings from Brooklyn.
I have this summer rule that when people ask me to do something with them, I try to say yes. I realize that I'm eager for new situations, memories, and adventures in my life.
I'm also starting to realize that the more we push off doing things with the people around us, the less opportunities we might have…because people change, move, grow, leave.
Life is alllll about timing and what I keep learning (the hard way) is that there’s never going to be some mysterious better time than now.
In this issue: Why I quit something I signed up for, how to approach awkward financial situations with your friends, and advice on how to have fun for free.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is my Monday Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it for over 8-years, every single Monday morning, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.
IT'S OKAY TO NOT FOLLOW THROUGH
A big part of who I am is a person who doesn't give up….
…easily, at least.
And just like with most strengths we have as humans, it can also follow us around as a deep-rooted weakness.
Because I don't give up, I find myself pushing forward through hard work, rejection, and endless pop-up challenges.
But because I don't give up, I find myself sticking around…way too long…for things I should have let go on (from projects to relationships).
This week, I dropped out of a class I signed up for. It was a novel writing class and I was looking forward to taking it for months.
But when the class started, I realized “Oh, no. This isn't what I signed up for!”
The class didn't involve any lectures or learning, just writing. It was going to be 3-hours, once a week, where you write solo while your Zoom was on.
Did I need to do a class like this? Sure, probably. It would help me meet my goal of finishing a book.
But when I thought about, I realized it wasn't the right place for me, right now, in my life.
Old Jen Glantz would have stuck it out and stayed in the 10-week course, even though it made her miserable and wasted so much of her time.
THIS Jen Glantz decided to drop out, get a refund, and spend the extra 3-hours doing something more productive.
There might be something you're holding onto right now in life that you know isn't serving you or isn't right for you.
Even if you're fueled by a stubborn soul like I am or bouts of confusion, know that it's okay to press the pause button, to take a step back, and to say goodbye to things that you're doing just because.
We're never stuck with the version of ourself we are today. We're constantly growing, changing, evolving, and so should the things we say yes to or give our precious time to.
All my love,
Jen Glantz
