The Pick Me Up is a Monday morning newsletter filled with advice, personal stories, and tips to help you get out of bed and jumpstart your week.
Greetings, friend! It’s me, Jen Glantz.
What’s your personality?
If you asked me about my personality, I’d say:
Quirky, shy, acutely funny, ferociously compassionate, entertainingly awkward, energetically passionate, and enormously determined.
I sound like I robbed a dictionary and stole the most random words. But if you spent 1-hour with me, that’s exactly how I think you’d describe me.
Or so I thought.
I’m on a quest to know myself better. But this can’t be done alone.
I simply asked two people to tell me what they think my personality is like. This is exactly what they said:
It’s pretty spot on to what I thought my personality was but each person said something that shocked me a little.
I am an extroverted introvert and I am super caring. I just constantly forget about those things and those things really explain a lot about my actions.
We all work so hard to change so many things. Our appearance, our wrinkles, our gray hair. But have you ever sat down and looked at your personality. Who are you? What kind of personality do you have and how do you want it to change?
I double dare you to try this. Take your phone and copy/paste this text message to two people:
Hi, how would you describe my personality?
Press send and just wait.
You bring your personality with you every single day and you bring it with you everywhere - on a first date or to the dentist’s office.
Might as well know what it is and what you come across when you interact with others.
In this issue: One small thing I did to change my stale personality and little pick-me-ups you might want to turn to this week.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is The Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it every Monday, for 8-years, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.
Ps. I’m so grateful that you’re reading this because writing this newsletter every week is my favorite thing. If you know anyone who would adore getting this in their inbox, it would mean the world if you’d refer them. As a thank you, I am now offering prizes:
⚡Instant Pick Me Ups
📚: I heard about this book on a podcast and immediately grabbed a copy. The story sounds incredible and the reviews of it have been stellar. I can’t wait to dive in and read it.
📄:I use this article whenever I’m introducing two people via email.
🎧: I loved learning about this woman’s life and all she’s overcome.
🛍️: Rounding up workout clothes that fit well and are good quality.
I tried this brand for the first-time and i’m obsessed with how these shorts and this sports bra fit. I’m feeling blahh about my body these days and this set just really fit so well. I felt confident in it! Worth the money.
Shorts that are super flattering and a matching sports bra.
Catch me in this bodysuit all summer.
All my workout clothes are dark colors so I picked these up for a pop of color.
These are my go-to’s for running errands.
I bought this top for Adam in almost every color.
💬: Be Someone.
Resting Pee Face
“You have a resting pee face,” a friend tells me during a mid-afternoon stroll.
“You know that’s not how the saying goes, right? It’s bitc…”
She cuts me off.
“I know what I said and I mean what I said. You just walk around town always looking like you have to pee.”
Dear reader, get yourself ONE good friend who says it like it is and doesn’t sugarcoat a thing.
I came home and starred at myself in the mirror. I tried to make a face like I had to pee and I looked squeamish, peculiar. Is this how I always look and why do I always look this way?
Our facial expressions are based on our thoughts.
And I am always overthinking everything.
Sometimes we’ll be hanging on the couch watching a TV show and Adam will say:
I can see how fast your brain is moving just by watching your eyes.
I’m a quirky, shy, acutely funny, ferociously compassionate, entertainingly awkward, energetically passionate, and enormously determined person.
But when my face is resting and my thoughts are spinning, I just look like I’m a person who always has to pee.
I want to change this because I want to add “friendly” to my personality traits. Deep down, I am, but I’m scared sometimes and that makes me look closed off.
I was at a workout class and this confident happy woman walked in. She had a big (genuine) smile on her face and made eye contact with everyone in the room. She hugged people hello. People smiled back at her. She brought sunshine into a dimly lit mid-day HIIT class.
I want to be more like her. I told myself. In the mirror, my facial expressions were blah. I looked unapproachable, sad, potentially even miserable.
That wasn’t the case. I was having a great day. I was feeling good. I was happy to be at the workout class. But I didn’t know anyone there and I was sitting there thinking about how much pregnancy weight I’ve gained. I was feeling self-concious.
The entire class I thought that if I want to be more like that sunshine woman behind me, while still being me, I wouldn’t have to change much.
Just two intentional things:
Smile and make eye contact.
I tried doing that for a few days at that exact workout class.
Rather than crawl inside and stare at my phone or myself in the mirror. I walked in and smiled and made eye contact with everyone who passed by (not in a creepy way).
I wish I could tell you that good things happened. That I made a best friend or even hugged someone hello.
To be honest, probably nobody noticed.
But I did.
Perhaps it looked less like I had to pee and more like I was awake, alive, and just happy to be exactly where I was.
Which is truly who I am.
(I respond to every comment! So pop in and say hello).

In NYC, it may not be the best idea to have an open and inviting face all the time. Some of the mentally unstable people see this as easy prey. When you live here long enough, you can forget to bring down your protective facade.
Hello from Seattle!
I love reading your newsletter each week and wanted to share with you a podcast that I've been listening to. It's all about escaping the NXIVM cult and is worth a listen.
You can find it at: Search CBC.ca/uncover season/escaping NXIVM. For some reason the episodes aren't listed in order so you have to scroll through and, it's from a few years ago but I really believe the information in this podcast is still relevant today.
Thank you for sharing your cheery perspective on life, it makes my Monday mornings brighter. :)
