PICK-ME-UP: STARTING AGAIN FEELS ROUGH
Hello! Greetings from Florida. I'm back here for a little while and working hard to keep my routine, which includes a morning workout. I need to move my body in the AM to shake off stress, anxiety, and a ton of energy that I wake up with.
So when I'm in Florida, I go running and it feels impossible. I used to not be able to run a mile and then I built it up to 10 miles only to get injured. Starting to build up my mileage as a runner again is so tough. Every step forward feels heavy and unfamiliar. But it's not just about running, it's about re-starting anything important in your life that matters.
Today, let's talk about that impossible feeling.
In this issue: The art of re-starting something you love that feels impossible, Spring hobbies to pick-up if you're bored, and a Monday feel-good playlist.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is my Monday Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it for over 8-years, every single Monday morning, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It makes my heart explode with joy.
The Pick-Me-Up: How to Start…Again
I wish I never stopped, but I did.
All of the things I love the most in life feel so good when I'm doing them.
I desperately love to write.
I've grown to love running.
I really dig playing the guitar.
But I don't do those things anymore.
Or at least as much I'd like to.
I can give you a ton of excuses as to why I don't do those things, but the truth is, I fill my days with so much stuff that doesn't really matter but feels like it matters during the 9-5 that I'm working.
The problem is, when I commit to going back to doing those things, it hurts.
Playing the guitar hurts my fingers all over again.
Writing feels so painful on my brain because I'm not inside a flow.
Running is so rough when you haven't ran in a while and getting to mile one feels laughable.
I'm back to running (for what feels like the 100th time) and I quit right before I hit 2-miles.
“Let's hit 2-miles,” Adam says to me at the 1.83 mile mark.
“I'm done. I am stopping right now.” It felt so hard to get to 2-miles that I just decided to stop trying.
Why do the things we love the most feel impossible to re-start?
It's not just because our body or our mind has to re-train itself to get back into the swing of things.
It's because we carry so much emotion with us when we got to start again.
During my runs, I think about who I used to be:
The person who could do 10-miles without feeling any pain. I think about how writing a book felt like swimming laps in a pool - smooth and tranquil. How playing the guitar brought me so much happiness but now it just makes me angry.
Today, I tried to run again and before I started, I promised myself that I'd make it to 2-miles, even if my mind wanted me to stop.
When it felt really hard, I didn't think back to who I used to be.
I thought about how I got to become that person.
Take another step forward. Take one more. Keep going.
The second time you do something, it always feels easier than the first time.
When I hit 2-miles, I just kept going a little longer to prove to nobody else but myself that I'm becoming the person I want to become again.
And I already finished the hardest part of the process:
Starting again.
All my love,
Jen Glantz
