Greetings JEN, It's me, your friend Jen. I'm writing to you with my Halloween costume on.
I'm going to a murder mystery dinner party at my friend's house. Everyone is supposed to dress like a vampire and then we sit around a table and play this murder mystery game. I've done this twice before and it's honestly so silly (and scary) and fun.
If you want to get a group of people together to hang out but don't know how to make a good time, do this. Ps. It's pizza themed!
In this issue: The scariest things usually come true, fun findings of the week, and my playlist.
Ps. Next week - this newsletter will look a little different when it arrives in your inbox. I'm switching the format a bit and giving you access to all the archives, bonus content, and more. Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is the Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it every Monday, for 8-years, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thanks for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.
THE PICK-ME-UP
I once went on a job interview and the person across from me asked me:
“What are you the most scared of?”
In my head, questions swirled:
In life?
About this job?
About sitting across from you as you question every aspect of my ability to do my dream job?
Meanwhile, words flew out of my mouth.
“I'm the most scared that i'll never be able to accomplish everything I want to in this lifetime.”
He flexed his eyebrows, jotted something down on a notepad, and told me he'd be in touch soon with an update.
What I was scared of came true:
I did not get that job.
But it's a question I think of constantly and when I'm with a friend and there's a lull in conversation, I'll ask them: what are you scared of?
I've even started collecting a detailed and specific list that I carry around in the notes on my phone:
I'm scared all the people I love so much, and feel I can't live without, will die.
I'm scared that if I have a child that I won't be a good mother
I'm scared that one day, everything I've worked so hard for, will evaporate and I'll have to start back at the beginning
I'm scared nobody will ever fully care about me in the way I need them to care about me
Oh! I'm scared I'll never be able to accomplish all the things I want to accomplish in this lifetime.
Lately, I'm so scared of a rat crawling up my leg as I wait for the subway in New York City.
Occasionally, when I'm cleaning out the contents of my phone, I'll eyeball this list and remember something that's painful but so, so, so true.
Our biggest fears can sometimes come true.
Especially the ones we have no control over:
Death, time, the actions of others, and those freaking rats.
So what if they do? What if they don't?
Life isn't supposed to be lived in fear.
The happiest people live without worry.
People tell you all the time to go out there and face your fears and some you can, when you're ready to face them:
Public speaking, heights, going on a first date after so many years.
& others you can't just press a button and grab coffee with on a Saturday.
Some enter your life when you least expect them to.
Others happen a little bit every single day - but it can take years to actually realize that they are happening: the realization that you wasted time….
One of the scariest things you can is know what you're scared of.
Because once you know that, you can decide if there's anything you can do about it…or…if you should just start living your life at a momentum where if those fears did come true, you did what you could to stop them from happening.
Tell someone you love them, every chance you get.
Pay more attention to the details of your life.
Care about yourself more than you have in a long time.
Dear friend, be scared of less, or else, your fears become a Halloween costume you just can't seem to ever take off.
All my love,
Jen Glantz
