PICK-ME-UP: THINGS ARE A LITTLE OFF-BALANCED
Hello! Greetings from Brooklyn. I'm so happy to be back home after a week in LA. Usually I leave Cali and yearn to live there again. This time, on my drive home from the airport, Adam was the one wishing he was still on Venice Beach.
“Why don't you miss it? Why are you suddenly so happy here.”
For the first time, in perhaps ever, what's making me happy in New York City is this odd feeling of community.
I've never had that before: a park near my house, a group of friends nearby, a gym I go to every morning.
ROUTINE AND COMMUNITY! Gaw, Jen, have you become boring?
I tell Adam that and he asks what will happen when the friends move away and the park gets stale.
“I can't think about that today,” I proclaim, not eager to trade dirty sidewalks for swaying palm trees just yet.
What makes you happy today is enough.
We don't always need to yearn for so much more on a Monday.
In this issue: What to do when things feel off-balanced, a spring shopping haul, and my favorite concert to watch.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is my Monday Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it for over 8-years, every single Monday morning, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It makes my heart explode with joy.
The Pick-Me-Up: When things feel off-balanced
I was unpacking my suitcase and hit my head on the wall.
It was already one of those days where the oddest things were going wrong. I tripped on nothing. My suitcase wheel randomly bent. I broke a nail typing on my phone.
So I wasn't super shocked when I hit my head, but I was in all kinds of pain.
I hit it really hard. Adam was behind me and heard the whole thing.
I fell to the ground and oozed pain.
“This one will leave a mark,” he said and he was right.
I had a golf-ball sized bruise that came with me everywhere I went last week. I didn't even try to cover it up. When people would ask me what happened to my forehead, I simply said:
THIS WEEK IS OFF-BALANCED.
Some weeks are like that. You feel like you might topple over. You feel like you are moving too fast.
I had (3) mantras that kept me going last week when things in my life just felt off.
#1: Go slower than slow
I worked at a slow pace last week. It took me forever to get back to emails and to complete my weekly to-do list. I actually had to put in a lot of hours this weekend to get it all done. BUT THAT'S OK. Knowing I was not rushing made me approach that off-balanced week with far less anxiety.
#2: Clear your schedule
I only have one day a week where I do phone calls. That way, I can focus on work the other days of the week. My 1 call day last week had 12 calls on it! I didn't have the capacity to handle that many so I asked 5 of the people to swap for another date. Clearing up time in the week helped me build in breaks and rest.
#3: Stay healthy
Last week I was also fighting off a cold as well so my goal was to make healthy choices - going to bed early, drinking extra water, protein smoothies, etc. Even when this was HARD, I remembered it was right.
We all have weeks that feel off and when those weeks happen, practice forgiveness, kindness, and give yourself healthy breaks.
All my love,
Jen Glantz

Mini Pick-Me-Up: Get Better
❤️
Lately, whenever I find myself feeling low and sluggish or sad and melting over a situation, I chant in my head:
Look at you!!! You 34-year-old badasss cutie pie human being.
And nobody hears these words but I do and it makes me feel so silly and proud of who I am and what I’m doing and what I have left to do in my life’s adventure.
I chant 34!! 34!! 34!!
And my own inside joke is what pushes me to not give up on myself, on an off-balanced week, or some of my wildest dreams.
