PICK-ME-UP: A SECRET KIND OF MISERABLEĀ
Hello! Greetings from Brooklyn. I've been running my businesses for the past 7-years mostly solo. I never felt like I had the cash, or the patience, to hire other people to help me. That meant I worked too much and did things I didn't need to do myself (like build websites or learn how to code).
Last week, I had a major photoshoot for my Bridesmaid for Hire website and decided to hire a team (makeup/hair artist, personal assistant, photographer, and a rented location) and sure, it cost me a lot of money, but it was an investment in my business and in myself.Ā
I'm very cost conscious, I've always been. But we pay a price in other ways (mental health, exhaustion, feeling overwhelmed), and it's important to think about that when you make decisions or set boundaries in your life.Ā
In this issue: Ā A note on how success can make you feel miserable, setting boundaries, and books I want to read.Ā
Why youāre getting this: Ā I'm Jen Glantz and this is my Monday Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it for over 8-years, every single Monday morning, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It makes my heart explode with joy.
The Pick-Me-Up: Success and Misery
Some of the most successful peopleĀ I know are the most miserable.
YEARS ago, I had drinks at SOHO house with this world famous author, whose books are movies, and he looked me straight in the eyes and told me how miserable he was.
You will be miserable too, Jen. He said, after I told him how badlyĀ I wanted the success he worked so hard to get insteadĀ of the rejection I worked so hard to get.Ā
You wouldn't know he was miserable. His books were on the front table when you walked into Barnes and Noble. His movies had Academy Award winning actresses in them. He floatedĀ between New York to write and LA to play in the clouds of Hollywood.Ā
Success, he said, makes your entire self feel like a rapidly deflating balloon. It'll never make you happy.
Like he knew what would make me happy? I rolled my eyes the whole way home.Ā
Over the years, when the things I worked so hard for finally happened, I found myself feeling miserable.
Like when I ran to see my book on the front table in Barnes and Noble, I thought confetti would pop inside of me. I felt like a deflated balloon.
Like when I got on the TODAY Show and afterward walked into a pizza shop and cried. I had given up so much for success, I sat there feeling so lonely.Ā
And I think about calling up this author and telling him...
Or sending a "wish you were" postcard and on the back writing:"You were right."
But he doesn't need to know that.
And for right now, for today, neither do I..Ā
*All of this is to say: chase success, work hard to get what you want, fight for that life you want to live, but know this:Success doesn't plug holes in your life, it makes them deeper.Ā
Work on the other parts of you that are crinkled.Ā
Only then will success feel...sparkling.Ā
All my love,
Jen GlantzĀ

Mini Pick-Me-Up: Boundaries, Boundaries, Boundaries
I tell everyone I know that they need boundaries.
Boundaries, boundaries, boundaries.
What will you do this week / what won't you do?
I've changed my schedule around and only do phone calls on 1-2 days a week. Ā The other days are for work and projects I need to spend time on.
That's my boundary of the week. What's yours?
