PICK-ME-UP: GO BACK TO THAT SPOT
Hello! Greetings from Boston. I spent the weekend here…just because. So many people I met here asked if i'm in town for work or a wedding. Last time, yes. This time, no. I came to explore a city I hardly know and eat allll the pizza I could.
The truth is, I like going back to spots I've traveled to before and when I get there, I like to do this.
What about you? Hit reply. Tell me where in the world you are on this Monday morning.
In this issue: Why you don't need hobbies, the power of regret, and fun lunch break reads to get you feeling delightful on this Monday.
Why you’re getting this: I'm Jen Glantz and this is my Monday Pick-Me-Up newsletter. I've been sending it for over 8-years, every single Monday morning, to thousands of awesome humans, just like you. Thank you for letting this email live in in your inbox. It truly makes my heart explode with joy.
Let's Talk About: Why Pick-Me-Ups are Better Than Hobbies
Hobbies? You Need Pick-Me-Ups:
When people ask me what my hobbies are, I foam at the mouth.
“Hobbies?"
“Yeah, like what do you do for fun?”
“Fun?” I'll reply, pondering my life choices and how I spend my quality time.
If I was being honest, I'd reply: TikTok, walking in circles around Brooklyn to get my 10,000 steps in a day, eating slices of pizza, cleaning out my closet, making eye contact with my dog, writing bucket lists for my life goals and taping them to the walls of my tiny apartment.
But usually I say: Playing the guitar, reading library books, taking solo vacations, writing poetry.
Which is a fine reply because very few people ask the most important follow-up questions, which is: When is the last time you did any of those things? Cause that's when the truth would come out.
My guitar, the library books, plans for a solo vacation, the typewriters, wellllll they are alll soo dusty.
The truth is, so many people don't have hobbies. Some people do. Most people don't. BUT we all have pick-me-ups, which are like hobbies but more feasible with the wiggles of how much time, energy, and money we have to focus on things we enjoy on a regular basis.
What are pick-me-ups? They are the little ways you enjoy your passions whenever you can, without the pressure of having to practice or do your hobby every week.
Like music or travel? Can't go to a concert or take a vacation for another 5-months? Do pick-me-ups instead. Go to a local show (I love these), YouTube an entire filmed concert of a band you love. Watch a documentary on a city you adore, find the cuisine of that city in your local area (or cook it yourself, you adventurous human).
You don't need to feel bad about not having a schedule of organized sports, vacations, or even grand activities. Instead, write a list of 10 pick-me-ups you can check-out when you're needing a break from your 9-5 or spending another night on the couch watching a Netflix show.
Want more ideas? I've got your back. Check this out.
All my love,
Jen Glantz
